"I’m in this Human First house…I go to Coney Island, I go out, I go to program.  I work at Toys R’ Us and I work at a nursing home. I like working at the daycare and working with the kids and reading them stories.  I love kids and I like being with them and playing with them and teaching them bilingual, English and Spanish, the number – uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. I like Human First…it’s a nice house – it’s the best. Human First means human…first.  A person first. It means a lot to me…it goes into my heart." - Vanessa Rivera, Program Participant

RESIDENTIAL SERVICES

At Human First we define home as a place where growth and independence are fostered for the people we support. We understand the diverse needs of our individuals and therefore utilize a person-centered approach to meet their needs, desires and goals.

Human First provides two types of residential services: Individualized Residential Alternatives and Individualized Support Services.

Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs)

Individuals living in IRAs reside in a home with 24/7 supervision and access to a full clinical staff that includes nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists. Human First provides comprehensive, person-centered care so that our individuals can learn, grow, and achieve their goals. Individuals are given the choice to live with others in a group setting or in individual apartments of their choosing. And, in the near future, Human First will expand its residential services to provide housing to individuals living on Long Island.

Individualized Support Services (ISS)

ISS enables individuals the opportunity to live more independently through a broad range of choices in apartment living. For example, their names appear on the lease once an apartment is rented, enhancing their self-sufficiency and self-esteem. And, in some cases, there are even opportunities for home ownership.

Weekly meetings with Human First staff helps individuals manage financial and daily living responsibilities, such as:

  • Monthly rent
  • Food shopping
  • Electricity bills
  • Leisure activities
  • Cooking
  • Laundry
  • Transportation
  • Fire safety
  • Leisure activities

To qualify for ISS, individuals must demonstrate an established source of income. Staff supervision is provided at residences if needed.
